We can all admit that we’ve woken up “on the wrong side of the bed” at some point, but there are ways to avoid it. Whether you’re one of those “early birds”, or a member of the mornings-are-the-worst club, here are a few tips to help you manage your AM routine to set you up for success for the rest of the day.

1. Fresh Face #FTW

Beauty starts from within, right? Right.

For many, applying a full face of makeup hijacks our entire morning, but a splash a cold water might be all that’s needed to freshen up. Bare-faced beauties are owning the red-carpet which naturally means this trend is bound for the masses.

Follow in the footsteps of celebs like Alicia Keys and skip the contour + extreme winged eyeliner. You’ll save time, serious time. One survey showed that women waste 474 days of their lives applying makeup. If saving time isn’t enough for you, you’ll also save face – from breakouts. A clean pore is a happy pore (and a clear complexion for you).

But if the thought of this makes you cringe, makeup can be done in 5 minutes or less if you organize. No more rummaging through your toiletry bag to find your favorite shade of lipstick – instead, utilize creative storage hacks, like vintage mason jars or old jewelry boxes. Either way, don’t let your AM makeup routine slow you down… you’ve got glass ceilings to break!

2. But first…Superfoods

First thing you reach for in the morning is your coffee? You’re not alone, but you might be surprised how upgrading your breakfast beverages to include superfoods can give you all the right feels (and no 2 p.m. crash). To that, we say “bottoms up”!

  • Ready to shine? Then you’re ready for this Turmeric Lemon Tonic, it’s sweet, a little spicy and a whole lot of refreshing. Here’s what you’ll need: 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder, a dash of cayenne pepper, 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup for sweetness, 2-3 cups of cold water, and some ice cubes. Throw everything in a glass, stir, and cheers!
  • Meet your digestive system’s new best friend: Ginger Morning Elixir. Blend the following ingredients until smooth: 1-2 cups of cold water, grated fresh ginger to taste (about 1-2 inches), 2 tablespoons of lemon or lime, 1 teaspoon of pure maple syrup.
  • For the slightly less ambitious among us, how about just a traditional superfood smoothie to kick start your day? We call this one the Green Goddess (partly because of the color, partly because it will bring out your inner goddess like never before). One thing we can guarantee: it might look green, but it definitely won’t taste green! Start with 1 cup of kale, which is rich in vitamin C and K, calcium, iron. Add 1-2 cups of fresh fruit for sweetness – apples, banana, avocado, berries etc. Pick and choose based on your taste preferences. Lastly, add 1 cup of water, a handful of ice (optional), and blend it up! Sprinkle a booster like hemp or chia seeds on top. Voila!

You’ll be surprised to see what taking a few minutes to recalibrate can do for your day.
